ABI/INFORM Trade and Industry - ABI/Industry has a business/management focus.  It covers a great number of health economic topics.

CAM on PubMed --CAM on PubMed allows you to search the PubMed database for information on complementary and alternative medicine

Cancerlit --Cancerlit allows you to search the PubMed database for cancer related literature

CathPCI -- CathPCI registry (about, Search) is a restricted access statistical database that assesses the characteristics, treatments, and outcomes of cardiac disease patients who receive diagnostic catheterization and/or percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) procedures.

CHE toxicant and disease database -- CHE toxicant and disease database is a searchable database that summarizes links between chemical contaminants and approximately 180 human diseases or conditions.It proves descriptions of toxic effects of chemicals to humans.

Clinical Alerts (National Library of Medicine) - provides information on NIH-funded clinical trails

Cochrane Library --The -- Cochrane Library is part of the Evidence-Based Medicine Reviews (EBMR).  It is an online collection of databases that provide up-to-date research on the effectiveness of healthcare treatments and interventions, as well as methodology and diagnostic tests. You can restrict your search to full text articles within this database. The databases within the Cochrane library include:

  • Cochrane central register of controlled trials
  • Cochrane methodology register (a bibliography on methods used in controlled trials)
  • Cochrane database of systematic Reviews
This database is available through  Ovid.

Comparative Effectiveness Research (CER) database  -- Comparative Effectiveness Research (CER) database (National Patient Advocate Foundation)  compiles comparative studies funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). 

Complementary and alternative medicine index --The Complementary and alternative medicine index allows you to browse documents by treatments, depletions, conditions, drugs, herbs and supplements

CRD database -- The CRD database (Centre for Reviews and Dissemination, sponsored by the National Institute for Health Research (NHS), UK).   --CRD has created three unique databases which can also all be searched through the Evidence based medicine reviews (OVID) 
  1. The Database of abstracts of reviews of effectiveness (DARE) database contains over 5000 abstracts of quality assessed systematic reviews on the effects of interventions used in health and social care. 
  2. NHS economic evaluation database (also available through OVID) -- The NHS Economic Evaluation Database (also known as NHSEED Evidence based medicine reviews) contains over 6000 abstracts of quality assessed economic evaluations. The database aims to assist decision-makers by systematically identifying and describing economic evaluations, appraising their quality and highlighting their relative strengths and weaknesses.  

  3. HTA -- HTA brings together details of over 8,000 completed and ongoing health technology assessments from around the world.

Database of abstracts of reviews of Effectiveness -- Database of abstracts of reviews of effectiveness (DARE) database contains over 5000 abstracts of quality assessed systematic reviews on the effects of interventions used in health and social care.  It can be searched through the Evidence based medicine reviews (OVID)

Database of International Rehabilitation Research Center for International Rehabilitation Research Information Database (CIRRIE) -- The Database of International Rehabilitation Research Center for International Rehabilitation Research Information Database (CIRRIE) currently contains almost 90,000 citations of international rehabilitation research published between 1990 and the present.

Developmental and Reproductive Toxicology Database (DART)  -- Developmental and Reproductive Toxicology Database (DART) is part of Toxnet and provides references to developmental and reproductive toxicology literature.

Dietary Supplement Labels Database --Dietary Supplement Labels Database  contains information on the ingredients of over 2,000 brands of dietary supplements sold in the U.S.

Diseases Database  The Diseases Database is a cross-referenced index of human disease, medications, symptoms, signs, abnormal investigation findings etc. This site provides a medical textbook-like index and search portal.

Drugs Interactions Checker The Drug Interaction Checker explains the mechanism of drug interactions, the level of significance of the interaction (major, moderate or minor), and in certain cases, can provide the recommended course of action to manage the interaction. The Drug Interaction Checker will also display any interactions between drug(s) and food.

Drugs and Lactation Database -- Drugs and Lactation Database (LACTMED) is a peer-reviewed and fully referenced database of drugs to which breastfeeding mothers may be exposed. Among the data included are maternal and infant levels of drugs, possible effects on breastfed infants and on lactation, and alternate drugs to consider

Emergency Medical Abstracts (filed on the Journal shelf) - This contains abstracts of articles in emergency related journals.  Most of these can now be found in PubMed.

Ethxweb - Ethxweb (National Reference Center for Bioethics Literature) includes over 28,000 volumes about ethical and bioethical subjects, including access to health care, resource allocation, genetics, human experimentation, reproductive technologies, abortion, and death and dying are indexed here. 

Evidence Based Medicine Reviews  (EBMR) --Evidence Based Medicine Reviews  (EBMR) is comprised of several different databases which provide systematic reviews of topics; article reviews; and access to definitive controlled trials. This includes: 
  • Cochrane Library
  • Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects (DARE)
  • The Health Technology Assessments (HTA)
  • ACP Journal Club
  • NHS Economic Evaluation Database

EvidenceUpdates -- EvidenceUpdates (British Medical Journal)  requires registration (which currently is free). It provides access to evidence based citations (from over 160 premier clinical journals)

Hazardous substances databank (HSDB) - It focuses on the toxicology of potentially hazardous chemicals. It is enhanced with information on human exposure, industrial hygiene, emergency handling procedures, environmental fate, regulatory requirements, and related areas.

Health and Wellness Center - -- Health and Wellness Center  database offers consumer health information, including access to the Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine, health and medical journals, thousands of pamphlets, streaming videos, and health articles from more than 3,000 general interest publications covering health care, diet, and fitness topics. This database is available to all users of the King county Library System.  You must log in with your library ID to download.  It is also available through the Seattle Public Library

HealthSTAR - The HealthSTAR database provides access to the published literature of health services technology, administration, and research. You will find information about management and quality issues.  Some articles are in full text.  This is available through OVID. A tutorial is available to help with self directed searching. 

Household products database - This links over 4,000 consumer brands to health effects from Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) provided by the manufacturers and allows scientists and consumers to research products based on chemical ingredients

HSTAT (Health Services/Technology Assessment Text) --HSTAT  is a free, electronic resource that provides access to the full-text documents useful in health care decision making. HSTAT includes: clinical practice guidelines, quick-reference guide for clinicians, consumer brochures, and evidence reports.

ICD registry (about), Search (restricted access)--The ICD registry provides a searchable statistical database about implantable defibrillators and defibrillator procedures.

ICD Search This provides the International Classification of Diseases.

Index to Chiropractic literature - Index to Chiropractic literature provides citations, abstracts where available, and links to full text to many journals that cover chiropractic literature from 1985 to present.

IndexCat - IndexCat is the predecessor of PubMed.  It indexes articles in medicine published before 1950. It is an important resource for researchers in the history of medicine, history of science, and for clinical research

International Clinical Trial Registry Portal (WHO)-- The Clinical Trials Search Portal provides access to a central database containing the trial registration data

Krames on Demand -- Krames on Demand provides access to patient education.  The same information can be found in the Online Health Library  but in a slightly different format.  

Lexi-interact online -- Lexi-interact onlinee focuses on drug interactions with other drugs and with natural products.  It is accessed through UpToDate. You must be within the Overlake Hospital to gain access.    Instructions are provided by the UpToDate Tutorial

Lippincott Nursing Procedures and skills -- This provides access to over 1000 evidence based procedures and skills online.  Online subscription will begin July 1, 2012.

Madame Curie bioscience database -- Searches chapters from over 100 books published by Landes Bioscience

Massage therapy research database -- The Massage therapy research database contains close to 5000 records in the area of massage. It is only up to date to 2006. Try PubMed for current information. The Massage Therapy Foundation has put together some preformatted searches in Pubmed.

MDConsult (Register for your own password)-- MDConsult provides full text access to selected medical books, journals, clinical practice guidelines, drug information, patient handouts and CME materials with an emphasis on primary health care. This database can also be accessed  through HEAL-WA. (restricted access).  Fill in the registration form to obtain a password.  You must access HEAL-WA yourself to access or download these resources

MEDLINE - MEDLINE is considered the world's most comprehensive source of life sciences and biomedical bibliographic information.  Subjects covered include all aspects of clinical medicine (diseases and disorders, diagnostic and therapeutic techniques and equipment), basic biomedical sciences (anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, pharmacology, etc.), the health care system (facilities, manpower, services, administration), dentistry, nursing, and clinical psychology. MEDLINE is available through several databases including OVID, and PubMed.  However the full text version is only available through HEAL-WA. Only select medical groups have access to this full text resource. Fill in the registration form to obtain a password to use HEAL-WA. MICROMEDEX -- (Restricted to authorized users.) --MICROMEDEX is a collection of different drug databases and includes information on side effects, dosages, interactions, and all FDA approved medications. This allows you to search for drugs, toxicology, disease, labs. interactions, and also provides patient educational sheets of medications.   Restricted to Overlake Hospital user community. 

Mosby's Nursing Consult-- Mosby's Nursing Consult is a comprehensive online resource for nurses containing access to the latest drug information, patient education resources, and reference books. It has a great section on evidence based nursing, and includes a search limit by evidence level, so you can narrow it down to published standards of practice.  There is little overlap with CINAHL. Access to this database is limited to the Overlake Hospital intranet or a networked computer located at the Overlake Hospital.

Mosby's Nursing Skills --Mosby's Nursing Skills is an online skills and procedures reference system providing over 100 interactive skills. Skills are indexed alphabetically as well as by specialty and category. Access to this database is limited to the Overlake Hospital intranet or a networked computer located at the Overlake Hospital.  This will be discontinued June 2012.

National Center for Biotechnology Information -- National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI)provides access to a database for DNA sequences and analysis tools, human genome resources and information on genetic diseases.

Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database - Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database  provides extensive scientific information on safety, effectiveness and contraindications of herbal and dietary supplements. It can be searched for free through the MedlinePlus Drugs Herbs and Supplements.  (Choose All herbs and supplements and search for your herb or supplement).

National Newspaper Core - this covers a wide variety of well known newspapers in the United States.  It is part of ProQuest

NLM Gateway--The NLM Gateway allows users to search in multiple retrieval systems at the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM). The current Gateway searches a wide variety of databases outlined in their Overview.

Online Health Library - Online Health Library provides links to "Health Sheets" which provide information written specifically for patients on diseases and conditions, diagnoses and treatments, etc as well as links to a drug reference guide which lists over 33,000 prescriptions.  This is a version of Krames on Demand but in a different format.  

OT seeker --OT seeker  is a database that contains abstracts of systematic reviews and randomized controlled trials relevant to occupational therapy

OvidOvid distributes electronic book and journal collections as well as access to a variety of databases.  You can access OVID through:

Patient education reference center --Patient education reference center features a comprehensive collection of current evidence based patient education information. These handouts can also be accessed through the Nursing reference centerThis database has restricted access through HEAL-WA. Patient information from Up-to-date--Patient information from Up-to-date  provides educational content on diseases and other medical conditions.  It is very consumer oriented. Pedbase - Pediatric Database containing descriptions of over 550 childhood diseases.

PEDro  - PEDro  (Physiotherapy Evidence Database) has been developed to give rapid access to bibliographic details and abstracts of randomised controlled trials, systematic reviews and evidence-based clinical practice guidelines in physiotherapy

Proquest -- ProQuest  is collection of multidisciplinary database providing access to millions of articles originally published in magazines, newspapers, and journals.  Many of the journals are consumer oriented. It can be searched all at once, or individually.   Try the tutorial on Basic Search  or The Quick Reference Guide .  It includes several different databases including:

Prospero -- Prospero is an international database of prospectively registered systematic reviews in health and social care sponsored by the National Institute for Health Research (NHS) and the CRD.  It is a brand new database, so there is not much information yet available to search.  

PsycLINE - a free database which indexes more than 250 journals in the subject area of psychology.  Not all the articles are in full text.

PubChem - PubChem is a database that looks at chemicals that have biologic actions.

Public Library of Law -- Public Library of Law is a database that includes 50-state and federal case law like Federal District, Bankruptcy, and Tax Courts and Federal and state statutes and regulations.  It cites the law and tells you which case but does not provide full text.

PubMed - PubMed, a service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine, includes over 18 million citations from MEDLINE and other life science journals. If our library has the item in paper copy or full text, an Overlake icon will appear on the right hand side.  Click the icon to download the article.   There is also specialized searches in categories such as etiology, diagnosis prognosis , etc.   There are several PubMed Search interfaces you might like to try such as eTBlast. Biomed or HubMed.  For mobile applications, read "Searching PubMed on a Mobile Device."  There is a PubMed Tutorial and PubMed Searching Help. Other guides of interest might be Searching with the MeSH Database and Combining MeSH Terms Using the MeSH Database. PubMed® Mobile Beta provides a simplified mobile friendly Web interface to access PubMed. PubMed Mobile includes the same basic search functionality and content as Standard PubMed; that is, all search terms and fields work similarly.

PubMed Health - PubMed Health is a subset of PubMed that specializes in reviews of clinical effectiveness research.  It answers questions such as "What works".  It is based on clinical trials and includes over 18,000 systematic reviews and health technology assessments.  It includes the Database of Reviews of Effects (DARE) as well as the National Cancer Institute Physician Data Query database.

Rehab+ - A searchable database of the best evidence from the health care literature in rehab medicine.

REHABDATA - a bibliographic database of the disability National Rehabilitation Information Center.  

Science Direct;-- Science Direct   indexes all journals published by Elsevier.  We have several of them in full text.   Access is available to any authorized user There is a Science Direct tutorial.  All of these journals are included in our catalog

Social Work Abstracts Plus - -Social Work Abstracts Plus, from the National Association of Social Workers, contains two unique databases in one subscription: Social Work Abstracts and The Register of Clinical Social Workers. This database has restricted access through HEAL-WA. Fill in the registration form to obtain a password.  You must access HEAL-WA yourself to access or download these resources

STS national database (about), Search (restricted access) --This statistical database collects outcomes in the areas of adult cardiac, general thoracic and congenital surgery.  It not only includes data, but more than 40 studies published in journals and textbooks.

Toxline (Toxicology literature online)- indexes toxicology literature.  It is part of Toxnet.

Toxnet -- Toxnet (produced by the National Library of Medicine)  indexes material related to toxicology, hazardous chemicals, environmental health, and toxic releases. It provides access to several databases including the following:

TRIP (Turning Research into Practice) -- The TRIP Database searches over 55 sites of high-quality medical information providing hyperlinked access to the largest collection of 'evidence-based' material on the web as well as articles from peer-reviewed journals and 'other' publications

UpToDate-- UpToDate provides up to date medical information, treatment recommendations and answers to clinical questions in over 385,000 evidence based references covering over 8000 topics.  It includes a drug database as well as links to Medline abstracts, illustrations and texts. Find the most important new medical findings since the last release Available to any authorized user you must be within the Overlake Hospital to gain access.  An UpToDate Tutorial is available here. 

Virginia Henderson International Nursing Library (VHINL) -- The Virginia Henderson International Nursing Library is a database of nursing research abstracts that have been posted in the Registry of Nursing Research by nurse researchers or collected from other nursing organizations

Washington News Stand - this covers several leading papers published in Washington.  It is part of ProQuest.
