Stay Balanced...Grow Stronger

As we age, scientific research has shown that that strength training can help reduce the signs and symptoms of many chronic diseases, including arthritis.

Exercise regimens known as strengthening exercises—those exercises showing an increase in the strength of your muscles, help to maintain the integrity of your bones and improve your balance, coordination, and mobility. Taken altogether, falls and broken bones can be reduced or eliminated.

This edition of FootNotes presents three websites to help you achieve a confidence to help you stay steady on your feet.

Mayo Clinic.com presents Balance Exercises Improve Stability, Help Prevent Falls and See How: Stretching and Strength-Training. Slide shows and video clips demonstrate stretching and strengthening exercises with valuable information to get you strated and keep you balanced.

Growing Stronger: Strength Training for Older Adults is a collaboration of Tufts University and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Based on the premise and supported by research that finds strengthening exercises are both safe and effective for women and men of all ages, including those who are not in perfect health.

Asleep At The Wheel?...Hopefully Not!

There are estimates that there are between 50 to 70 million Americans suffering from some form of sleep disorder; that is nearly one in six Americans! The adverse health effects are staggering including increased risks for diabetes, obesity, hypertension, heart attack, stroke, or even depression.

Those who struggle with chronic sleep disorders such as insomnia, narcolepsy, restless leg syndrome and sleep apnea feel quite hopeless with a sense of despair hindering their daily functioning which ultimately affects their lives. Don't take my word for it, this is just a small part of the findings reported in a new publication from the Institute of Medicine publication Sleep Disorders and Sleep Deprivation: An Unmet Public Health Problem (2006).
