Patient
Education....Why Not!
Patients
are becoming more proactive in
their own healthcare, either by choice or necessity. How can we help
them understand a diagnosis, medical
condition, medical/lab test, or
medication? Have you thought about
patient interaction at point of
service? The Virtual Medical Library
has numerous patient education resources and
links available with just a few
keystrokes.
Our
Medical Professional, Nursing & Allied
Health Professional Resource pages and
Consumer Health and Education page
each contain
the subject heading of "Patient
Information Handouts". Under this
topical heading are links to many of the
clinical specialty association and organization
patient education areas. One such link
comes from familydoctor.org from the American
Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) This
simple and informative site provides
easy-to-understand medical topics in a
printer-friendly format.
Many
of you have availed yourself of the subscription-based resources
containing Patient Information
Handouts. One of the most widely used
subscription-based programs is
MDConsult. Did you know that
MDConsult
provides over 500 handouts that can include
special instructions customized by you for
your patient? To begin using this
resource stop by the library and create a
personal Overlake account to this up-to-date
tool!
Don't
forget our very special page of
Multilingual/Multicultural Health Brochures
& Information Sites. Since 2002 this timely
subject page has been growing with many
special topics to assist you with our
ever-changing population choosing Overlake
Hospital for their healthcare.
As
you have seen in recent years, the profile
of the typical American, or typical American patient really doesn't
exist. Providing appropriate care to people
from diverse backgrounds, when their
knowledge of different communities is
limited, brings an enormous challenge. With
little opportunity within the existing
curriculum of the various health professions
to provide adequate and appropriate training
to meet this growing need, our response is
to provide simple and accessible information
for direct use in a clinical or community
setting.
The
Multilingual/Multicultural Health Brochures
& Information Sites
page brings together on one page a number of
resources readily available for use in
day-to-day practice.
Seasonal
Flu Is Almost Here
Flu
is a contagious respiratory illness caused
by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to
severe illness, and occasionally can lead to
death. A special topical page was created to
provide up-to-date information throughout
the flu season.
Seasonal
Influenza / Flu Resources
presents a vast array of resources providing
both the clinician public
information that can be used to prevent and
treat this annual illness. Located on both
the Medical
Professional Resources
and Consumer
Health & Education Resources
pages under Infectious
Diseases
and Infections,
respectively. We've added some new resources
to this special topic page last reported
upon last fall.
Remember,
one of the best ways to avoid catching the
flu is by getting a flu vaccination each season.
